Towards More Civilized Discourse

I find myself a little dismayed when I check out a blogroll and I DON'T find These Stone Walls. Father MacRae is an excellent writer, a light to the world, and a stunning example of obedience and charity while under duress. Case in point: His post entitled, Holy Hostility, Batman! He ably decries the nastiness, name-calling, spite and vituperation prevalent in a fairly large number of blog comboxes and other online communities. He makes the case that it's not enough for the blogger to refrain from such behavior; it is also incumbent upon the blog admin to prune nastiness out of their comboxes as well. In fact, this is one of the reasons I moderate comments.

(another is so that I'll have notification of some sort that a comment has actually been posted. It's not something that happens a lot around here.)

And I fully agree that one of the hallmarks of a good blog is a good community participating in the combox. But what do you think?

Frankly I like the fact that blog comments are moderated. As a new convert and new Christian, it is Soooo difficult to try to weed out the crazies and heretics and blasphemers. I have to admit that the crazies are easier to spot than the others. I try to make it a point to read and study about my faith but I'm in need at times for good apologetics. Which I'll try your suggestion. I feel that I need the full armor of God at my side when encountering the doubters and disbelievers...thanks.

I visited your blog, and found that you are deep in Protestant Bible Belt territory, like myself. Paying better attention to your youth within the faith, I'm going to back up from the suggestion that you ought to reach out in love to the blasphemers, heretics and crazies -- for now. When St. Paul converted, he took some time (a couple years, if I recall correctly) to learn the faith before he went out and evangelized.

The best thing you can do for yourself, your faith, and your circle of friends is to stay crazy in love with your God and His bride, the Church.

I'm a hack lay apologist, and am always ready and willing to try to direct you to others better than myself whenever I can.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will take your advice and back away and learn more of my faith. I am crazy in love with God and my faith. When I encounter the Protestant heresies it causes me to quake in my boots because I start to wonder who is right!!!! My guess is the oldest church is the one who has it right. I don't want to bet my eternal life on a faith formed by a disgruntled priest and others down the line who broke away from his teachings. I really appreciate your kind words. Thanks again and God bless you.

That seems prudent to me. One site loaded with self-defense techniques for when you're confronted by those who, as Servant of God +Fulton Sheen put it, hate what they think is the Catholic Church, is the Bible Christian Society -- seek out the two-minute apologetics. There are a LOT of them, so using ctrl-F in Firefox (please tell me you're browsing with Firefox or SRWare Iron instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer) will let you pick out something like what you need.

Ok, I really need help now. Can I email you and ask a couple of questions outside the combos?

Yes, to arkanabar at gmail dot com. Bear in mind two things:

first, I subscribe to the Welborn protocol, which is to say that I may use your emails as fodder for blogging;

second, my wife has permission a priori to read any email I get atall.
